In the heart of the Champagne region in France, Parisian architectural firm Explorations Architecture has created a new police station - Commissariat d é pernay - that combines security and humanistic atmosphere for the small town of É pernay.
The project is located on the edge of the town, surrounded by vineyards, within the former military camp plot, and together with surrounding public facilities such as high schools and conference centers, forms a diverse and integrated urban texture.
The project not only continues the historical context of the site, but also responds to the challenges of natural terrain, injecting a touch of contemporary atmosphere into the town skyline with clear and powerful architectural language.
The honeycomb shaped perforated metal facade reflects the warm wooden grille entrance, and the Commissariat d'Epernay police station welcomes the public with a transparent and restrained attitude, showcasing a spatial vocabulary of safety and affinity in the interplay of light and shadow.
Pentagonal layout derived from terrain
The base has undulating terrain, irregular boundaries, and some soil has been contaminated due to past military use. These complex conditions became the starting point for architects to conceive, ultimately leading to the formation of a pentagonal layout. This layout fully utilizes boundary wheels to transform limitations into features, while also becoming an important strategy for organizing functional spaces and responding to the surrounding environment.
Dual anchor points of city and landscape
The new police station occupies a relatively high position and has a good view, thus naturally becoming an important visual landmark of the town. As a symbol of public power, its architectural language needs to balance an open attitude towards the outside world with strict protection internally.
The main entrance faces the city and adopts a large area of floor to ceiling glass to enclose the reception hall, like a showcase open to the town, exuding a transparent and approachable atmosphere. It attempts to break the traditional impression of police stations being closed and cold, and build a sense of trust between people and the system.
Interior Layout: Dual Care of Function and Psychology
In order to integrate safety and efficiency, the interior of the building revolves around a central courtyard. The courtyard is like a natural barrier, moderately isolating the office and police space from the outside, while improving communication efficiency between internal departments.
The open layout enhances air circulation and natural lighting, creating a relatively pleasant working environment for police officers. The reception hall is surrounded by wooden grilles and large glass panels to create a warm atmosphere, paired with simple counters and embedded seats, creating a friendly and orderly public space for the police station.
The clear water mold wall and wooden door frame complement each other, and the interior corridor of the police station displays a simple and bright spatial vocabulary, emphasizing the balance between functional efficiency and comfortable work.
Material: rational body, warm heart
The exterior facade is wrapped in continuous punched metal plates, presenting a uniform geometric contour. Hole design can effectively regulate light while ensuring internal privacy, responding to the police demand of "visible but invisible".
The metal skin reflects the details of the surrounding nature and architecture in light and shadow, creating a subtle connection between the building and the environment. On one side of the courtyard, a warm wooden grille creates a comfortable atmosphere, relieving work intensity and providing psychological relaxation.
Multi layer nesting of security mechanisms
Design a fully integrated terrain advantage and passive protection strategy. The main structure of the building is elevated and arranged to enhance the safety level with natural terrain. Planting arrangements and landform shaping are also used as protective measures in composition.
The service courtyard is the core of traffic organization, dividing pedestrian and vehicular flow lines. The ground floor provides a safe passage for official vehicles, while the first floor courtyard connects to the employee rest space, forming a clear and efficient functional flow.
This pentagonal police station did not choose to define its safety with a high wall rail network, but achieved a subtle balance between order and openness through spatial organization and material language. It is not only a node of order in the city, but also a place for trust and dialogue between people and institutions.
