Zaha Hadid Architects in the UK has completed four corner wing buildings with steel canopies for the Zhuhai Jinwan Civil Art Centre on an artificial lake in China.

The center is located in Zhongxin Lake, Zhuhai, and is characterized by its vast rooftop landscape. Zaha Hadid Architects imitated the V-shaped flight formation of migratory birds in southern China.

The Zhuhai Jinwan Citizen Art Center includes three different cultural venues - the Science Center, the Art Museum, and the Performing Arts Center.

The Performing Arts Center includes a grand theater with 1200 seats and a multifunctional Black Box with 500 extendable seats.

Zaha Hadid Architects said, "Each venue in Zhuhai Jinwan Civic Art Center integrates three different cultural institutions for the city, each integrating unique features and creating different tourist experiences, but all venues are unified through coherent form and structural logic."

Zaha Hadid Architects said, "In line with the pattern of migratory birds flying in formation in southern China, the grid steel canopies covering each site are configured through repetition, symmetry, and scale changes."

The Zhuhai Jinwan Citizen Art Center is designed as the core of the Aviation New City, a community in Jinwan District that can accommodate 100000 residents. It is connected to the Zhuhai Airport intercity railway and can be reached in less than an hour from Shenzhen and Hong Kong.

The building is built on a platform located within an artificial lake, connected to the surrounding environment through pedestrian ramps and tunnels.

Zaha Hadid Architects divided the site into four wings, one or two large and two small - one wing is the central square. They are 170 meters long and 270 meters wide.

As a shared external foyer for all four venues, the square is connected to pedestrian overpasses and tunnels that extend across the lake to the shore, making it convenient for people to enter.

Each site has a steel canopy at the top, which is composed of prefabricated steel panels. They are supported by only 22 pillars in total.

Zaha Hadid Architects said that all venues have glass facades facing the square, allowing "visitors to determine the personality and characteristics of each venue".

Internally, the Grand Theater and Art Museum use light colored materials, while the Black Box and Science Center use dark colored materials.

The art gallery includes exhibition space, storage and administrative areas, as well as sculpture circulation space, which architect Zaha Hadid described as a 'continuous white ribbon'.

At the Science Center, Zaha Hadid Architects has placed a lecture hall next to several interactive exhibition areas.

The pattern design of the roof landscape is used as the theme for the entire interior, such as the sound reflecting ceiling of a grand theater.

The Zhuhai Jinwan Citizen Art Center also has several interactive outdoor areas, including an open-air theater on the west side for outdoor performances. Meanwhile, bridges and spaces bring vitality to the multi-level square.

The artificial lake itself was designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, in line with Zhuhai's "Sponge City" goal one - which means it will help alleviate floods, water pollution, and water scarcity by storing excess water.

The lake will also incorporate aquatic flora and fauna, which will naturally filter pollutants. Sponge cities are developing in cities across China.

The final work of the building includes a waste heat recovery system, which will be used for the hot water supply of the center, as well as a water circulation system.

Zaha Hadid Architects is a studio founded by the late Iraqi British architect Zaha Hadid in 1979. Now led by Patrik Schumacher.

In other parts of China, the studio has recently completed the Jiangxi River Bridge, which is developing a 210 meter tall skyscraper with curved shapes and planted terraces.
