Chengdu is the hometown of many well-known Chinese writers over the past 50 years and also a leading incubator for science fiction creation in China. On October 18-22, 2023, the World Science Fiction Congress was held in China for the first time, and the newly built Chengdu Science Fiction Museum was the venue for the conference.
The Chengdu Science Fiction Museum is located at the core of the Jingrong Lake area in Guodu District, Chengdu. The building looks like a "nebula" and is poised to fly. The venue design integrates Sichuan cultural elements such as "Nebula, Sanxingdui Gold Foil Mask, and Ancient Shu Eye". The overall shape of the venue is a silver metal roof, reflecting a sense of light and modern technology, triggering public exploration of the building and the unknown.
Directly above the venue hall, there is a water droplet shaped glass covering an area of 1382 square meters, resembling the "vertical view" of the Sanxingdui bronze mask, named "Science Fiction Eye". The designer aims to use this as a metaphor for the age of 13.82 billion years and perfectly integrate ancient culture with modern science fiction culture, achieving a dialogue effect that spans thousands of years.
The design of the main building integrates with the natural landscape of the lakeside, and the visit flow is based on activity nodes connected by pedestrian routes. Starting from various angles of the city, it extends through the surrounding parks to the center of the science fiction museum. The fluid form of the roof radiates radially around a central point inside to 7 corners, guiding visitors to disperse to many different activity areas.
The science fiction museum with a construction area of approximately 59000 square meters includes an exhibition hall, multifunctional hall, conference hall, and supporting space, maximizing the flexibility and adaptability of the venue itself, and can host various exhibitions, conferences, and activities. Its well lit atrium skylight - Science Fiction Eye and massive glass curtain wall facing the magnificent Xiling Mountains connect the indoor scene with the outdoor environment.
Natural mixed ventilation provides visitors and employees with a comfortable indoor environment throughout the year. The photovoltaic panels used in local locations of the science fiction museum can help meet the energy-saving needs of the building. After precise calculation of the roof size, it can provide multiple modes of shading effects for the building. The overall design of the building conforms to the three-star standard for green buildings in China, and is developed through detailed digital modeling analysis to maximize the efficiency of site conditions, solar radiation, and other factors.
The science fiction museum integrates the landscape with local plants, collecting and storing rainwater for natural filtration and reuse. A wetland along the Jingrong Lake will be rebuilt as an indispensable part of Chengdu's sustainable drainage system, reducing floods and increasing the city's biodiversity.
The Chengdu Science Fiction Museum will create a vibrant innovation center for Chengdu, connecting the past, present, and future in a unique way.
