In September, the W Hotel of Melco Macau, built by world-renowned Zaha Hadid Architects, officially opened.

Zaha Office was commissioned to complete the expansion of the resort in 2017, designing the second phase of Melco Film Festival and its new leisure, entertainment, and hotel facilities, including one of the largest indoor water parks in Asia.

The design inspiration for the second phase is derived from Hollywood movies shot in Macau in the 1950s, which reinterpret the rich details, bold geometric shapes, and contemporary style of Art Deco era architecture in a modern way, symbolizing the fusion of East West culture, history, and natural aesthetics in Macau.

This is the 10th W Hotel in Greater China and the 68th in the world, with a total of 40 floors and 557 hotel rooms and suites, providing guests with a range of facilities such as coffee shops, restaurants, swimming pools, spa centers, gyms, and recording rooms.

01.Architectural Design

The building tower of W Hotel adopts the Art Deco architectural style that was popular in the golden age of film, but innovatively expresses it. The black silver glass curtain that pays tribute to the film and the V-shaped hook edge that metaphorically symbolizes "starlight" complement each other, making the layered and stretched tower body both retro and modern, cleverly blending the new film theme and W's time and vitality.

The vertical shape of the hotel tower is outlined around the exterior of the building. The insulated glass unit and sunshade are composed of three different levels of glass, which can reduce solar radiation and glare while maintaining indoor thermal comfort for guests and employees.

As a 2021 BREEAM Asia wards award-winning project, the high-performance building maintenance structure and new efficient services of the second phase of Melco Film Festival will help reduce the energy demand of the entire resort.

After conducting an environmental assessment of the site, the development of the second phase of Melco Film Festival is located far from the protected wetland of the Macau Road Ice Ecological Zone, covering an area of 15 hectares. The orientation and configuration of the elliptical tower have been calculated, which is conducive to maintaining natural ventilation inside and around the resort. The ecologist team of the project has also developed measures to protect the existing flora and planted local species that are suitable for the climate of Macau.

02.Interior Design

The design of the W Hotel in Macau's Melco Cinema perfectly blends film and architecture, creating a space that feels like being in a fantasy movie world.

The hotel is filled with artistic and creative design, as well as unique architectural forms and material applications, creating a dazzling visual feast, making people feel like they have returned to the golden age of film and television in the 1950s, immersed in the charm of film art.

Entering the iconic Living Room of W brand, the first thing that catches people's attention is the LED installation art that runs through the front desk reception, concierge desk, and sofa lounge.

This device is like a roll of flying movie film, with dynamic digital images and classic characters such as "Huang Feihong" and "Autumn Fairy Tales" appearing on the screen, making it immersive.

In addition to the functions of connecting the lobby and checking in, the main part of the Chaotang is also serving as the hotel's all-day coffee and cocktail bar service area, creating a social scene for guests in the light and shadow.

In the rest area, copper screens in the shape of tents create a transparent and independent seating area, making people feel private and comfortable no matter where they are. The modern and avant-garde sofa is arranged in an orderly manner, and between the sofa seats and the desk, lighting fixtures like a spotlight on a movie set are either placed or erected to illuminate social scenes.

Chaotang also uses chandeliers inspired by fishing lanterns, tracing back to Macau as a fishing village; Use a screen that combines Portuguese style and Chinese style windows to showcase Macau as the cultural foundation of the intersection of Portuguese and Chinese styles. After nightfall, the light and shadow formed by these elements act like a projector, telling the history and characteristics of Macau in detail.

In the Chaotang, the W Hotel of Macau's Melco Film Festival also prepared a colorful egg:

This is called A The hidden bar of PD. has a separate entrance, which feels like walking into a tropical greenhouse. The bartender will draw spices from the greenery on the plant wall and blend them into a special cocktail, enjoying the "A Perfect Dose (A.PD)" in the private atmosphere protected by the greenery.

Entering the elevator, there are not only "greeting carpets" that change with different time periods, but also a large number of "entertainment reporters" waiting for you. The cameras in the hands of the reporters are all focused on you, giving people a sense of trance like a movie superstar walking on the red carpet.

▼Guestrooms

The W Hotel in Macau has a total of 557 guest rooms, with vibrant and creative designs.

In response to the hotel's design theme of "returning to the golden age of cinema", the room number sign on the guest room floor adopts the form of a cinema sign.

The design of the interior of the guest room is inspired by classic film elements and Macao's maritime history, so that guests can feel the unique charm of East and West cultural integration in the collision of Hollywood elements and Macao's local culture. The wide french window can also provide a panoramic view of the city scenery

▼[Jinjin]

Jinjin, as an all day restaurant that blends international flavors and diverse culinary cultures, is inspired by the bustling market of Macau in its early years. The English name Hawker Hawker represents the resounding selling on the market.

The lightbox at the entrance of Tianjin features neon letters on the signs of multiple roadside stores, highlighting the design theme of the restaurant's bustling market.

In terms of ceiling decoration, retro lantern shaped decorations and irregular mirror surfaces are mixed, resembling the neon lights of traditional tea restaurants. The fusion with the murals, greenery, and landscape windows around the hall is also real and unreal, as if in a kaleidoscope.

▼Miriam

Except for Chaotang and Jinjin, the other two dining spaces of the W Hotel of Macau's Melco Film Festival are located on the highest 40 floors of the building. Firstly, there is the modern Cantonese restaurant [Miriam].

The restaurant name is inspired by the famous Hong Kong star Yang Qianchao and countless divas who are active in the film and music industry.

The metal brackets and decorative pieces bloom on the ceiling, resembling the skirts of the diva's performance costumes. On the display panel on the dining table, the eyebrows and eyes of Hollywood's golden age actresses are showcased with unparalleled elegance amidst ink and lustre.

▼Blind Tiger

Adjacent to the characteristic bar [Blind Tiger] of [Miriam], sitting with an open view, it is a wonderful combination of clubs and recording studios in the 1950s.

The Blind Tiger main bar is guarded by a suspended ceiling light with glass blades gathered together, and the inspiration for the wine cabinet displaying various types of gin and restricted whiskey comes from the pharmacist's vertical cabinet for storing medicinal herbs.

At the end of the bar, it is the first W sound effect suite in Greater China equipped with professional live recording equipment., The perfect integration of the club's social attributes and the professionalism of the recording room allows guests to immerse themselves in dynamic music while tasting various gin and specialty cocktails.

Other regions

The banquet hall has an unconventional serious atmosphere, with ceiling lights resembling a light box canopy at the entrance of the theater, and long or short leather stools scattered throughout the audience area, making the meeting more relaxed and interesting.

The hotel's fitness facilities are all located on the third floor, and the W brand's iconic WET swimming pool is 16 meters long. The mirror design of the ceiling reflects the flowing pool water.

Located in Macau, a city with unique historical and cultural characteristics, the W Hotel of Macau's New Melco Cinema showcases Chinese and Portuguese culture, meticulously capturing the essence of the fusion of old and new cultures to provide guests with a unique modern and immersive authentic experience.
